About Swing Machine Golf

What is Swing Machine Golf? It’s my golf instructional technique based on the perfect golf swing of Iron Byron. No, I don’t want you to be all mechanical when you swing. I just want you to understand how Iron Byron works and incorporate its elements into your own golf swing. If you do, you will play the best golf of your life!

The Perfect Golf Swing

At 17 years old, I was a self-taught scratch golfer. When I turned 19, I was in bit of slump so I decided that I had to learn the fundamentals of the golf swing so I could get my game back on track and know what to do in case it ever fell apart like this in the future. Being a bit of a perfectionist, I wasn’t just looking to learn a good swing. I wanted my swing to be perfect.

This quest to find the perfect golf swing lasted for the next 10 years. In this time, I tried every tip, training aid and method out there. Nothing worked and I still didn’t have the answer to how the golf swing worked! This truly was the most depressing time of my life. I really don’t know how I even kept playing because golf was not fun.

Then, one day I saw Iron Byron hit a golf ball (Iron Byron was created by True Temper Sports to test golf equipment and it was used by the USGA for many years to make sure clubs and balls conformed to the rules of golf).

This is when the light bulb went off. I thought to myself that a machine exists that has a perfect swing and it was modeled after one of the best golfers of all time. The question I asked myself was, why are we not trying to copy it?

So, the next time I went to play, I had the machine in the back of mind. I started off my round just like I normally would by spraying my shots all over the place. Once I got to the 11th tee, I remembered about Iron Byron. I began to relate it to my own golf swing.

While thinking about it, I did 3 practice swings imagining I was the machine. Then, I stepped up to the ball. Still thinking this way, I hit the drive. Boom! 300+ absolutely dead straight down the middle. Needless to say, I was in shock! I couldn’t believe what I just witnessed. I hit my next shot and again it was dead straight as well.

The next hole was a 240 yard par 3. Boom! Dead straight 2 iron on the green. Again, I was in shock.

As the round progressed, I continued to hit the ball better than I ever have and to this day I still do. The best this is … I rarely practice anymore!

I realize that this story may seem unbelievable to some people. For those disbelievers, here is my golf swing compared to the Iron Bryon:

My original concept when I first taught other people was to make them look like great golfers when they hit the ball. Now, I’m not just talking about making them look good. I’m talking about making the average player look like they can shoot 65. The thought was that pros had the right fundamentals. If I made the average person look like a pro, then they too, would gain the right fundamentals. These proper fundamentals would then allow them to hit great shots and improve their games.

Although I really didn’t change the way I taught after making my Iron Byron discovery, it reaffirmed why I was able to transform people’s swings so quickly and why what I was teaching worked so well. It also told me why I teach the swing positions I teach. The Iron Byron finally gave me the answers to the golf swing. By answers, I mean that there must be a reason why you have to do certain things when you swing a golf club. By relating each position back to Iron Bryon, I finally had the proof I was looking for and could relay it to my students.

I don’t know about you, but I’m a guy that needs to know why I have to do something. You cannot tell me to just do it without backing it up with solid proof. I guess this is why I went to so many teachers and tried so many different methods without ever really understanding why I was supposed to do certain positions.

So How Does Swing Machine Golf Work?

I know there are some people out there that don’t get how you can copy a machine. Other’s think it will be mechanical. Still other say it’s only got one arm, it’s legs don’t move, it has no shoulders etc. Well, Swing Machine Golf is not about any of these things. It’s about understanding the machine and incorporating its 3 elements into your own swing. Once you do, you will hit the ball better than every before. By understanding the Iron Byron you will also know exactly what you should be working on thus, eliminating all of the confusion you have had in the past.

Understanding the Iron Byron really can get your game back on track fast and finally allow you to develop the swing you have always wanted.

Don’t take my word for it though. Watch the video below to see what George Manning, the inventor of Iron Byron has to say:

  1. Paul,

I have a bit of a problem with the concept of “Powerless Arms.” Are there any other images or descriptions that would make it a little easier to understand this concept?

  2. Interesting… I’m an “older” person. Golfing for many years. When playing more, shot in 70s a few times. Could not hit it very far. This year it finally occurred to me that the golf swing is an around thing NOT an up and down one! I may have hit my better longer shots that around way but was not aware that it happened that way.

It has taken most of the summer for the change to develop/take place. Now leading with the hips is sort of automatic. Never could get there w/ the up and down swing.

  3. Barry,

Thanks for the comment. A lot of people have a problem with the concept of powerless arms. Here are 2 posts on this very subject:
