After returning to the game this year, he got his handicap back down to a 2. Anyway, he called me up to talk about little about his game and to find out what Swing Machine Golf is all about.

Throughout the conversation, he went into great detail about everything he’s currently working on. I wasn’t surprised when he told me he was working on a few different methods, as well as a bunch of other tips from pros that he had been talking to recently.

Now keep in mind that this is the mindset of a low single digit player. You would think that someone of his ability would know that this isn’t the way to go about working on the golf swing but this is not uncommon because people are always looking for the miracle swing fix.

Unfortunately, I have first hand experience with this mindset as well because a long time ago I would trying anything and everything and listening to anyone and everyone just hoping someone was going to give me the magical answer to get me back on track. This way of thinking only left me more confused and more frustrated.

In looking back, I really wish that I would have worked on one thing at a time until I had that specific thing mastered. This way, I would not have been confused, I would not have been experimenting, I would not have had 5 things on my mind every time time I tried to hit the ball. By having a singular thought, I would have made changes so much faster and actually improved my golf game instead of just spinning my wheels.

If you really want to improve your golf swing this year, here’s what you should do:

1.Understand exactly how the golf swing works
2.Create a game plan
3.Stop working on too many things
4.Be patient

1. Understand Exactly How the Golf Swing Works

All you have to do to understand exactly how the golf swing works is to understand Iron Byron then relate it back to your own golf swing. I know there are people out there who don’t get it, don’t see it, or don’t believe it but it really does give you the answers.

If you are one of these people then I ask you to watch the video of myself and Iron Byron again in the video at the top of the this page. As you do, notice how closely my swing matches the machine’s swing (which hits the ball perfectly). Then, the next time you go to hit balls try to image you are the machine. This is exactly how I got my swing back on track after struggling with it for over 10 years.

2. Create A Game Plan

Before you just jump right in and start working on all sorts of positions you may want to assess your swing and prioritize what needs to be worked on. What I mean is, you may already be doing some positions quite well, while others need some major work. In this case, I would take note of the major changes and minor changes and work on the major ones first.

I say this because making major changes may fix other positions in your swing without you even realizing it. This is one of the reasons I teach the follow through first. You cannot get to my follow through position without doing a half decent swing. So, mastering the follow through positions actually starts changing other positions in the swing without you even realizing it.

To understand what you have to work on in your swing, just video tape it. If you don’t have a video camera use your cell phone or digital camera. Nowadays, these 2 devices allow you to shoot video clips.

After you have shot your swing, play it back while flipping through the pages of your Swing Machine Golf Book or freeze framing my positions in the DVDs. By comparing what you’re doing to what I am doing, you’ll quickly see if you are out of position or not.

As you go through each position, write down the ones that are the most different from my position under the heading “major changes.” Then, write down the positions that don’t look too bad under the heading “minor changes.”

Now, work on only the major changes until you feel you have mastered them. As you do, keep checking your swing positions to mine.

Once you feel that you have mastered the major changes, take a look at the other all of your other positions as well to see if your list of minor changes has been reduced.

Finally, start working on minor changes. Once you’re at this stage, you will have developed a great golf swing and will be playing the best golf of your life.

3. Work On 1 Thing At A Time Until You Have It Mastered.

Don’t fall into the trap of working on 5 things at once. I realize that you want results fast but trying to make a bunch of changes all at once is not the answer. Working on too many things at once is going to leave you confused and you’ll never fully master your swing positions to the point that they don’t break down.

The best way to work on your swing would be to work on one thing at a time until you have that one thing mastered. I know most people won’t want to do this so here’s another way you can work on your swing. Simply, break your swing down into 3 areas:

1. Backswing
2. Downswing
3. Follow through

Now, pick out one thing in one of these areas and work on it. For example, you could work on your takeaway going back and another position in your follow through. Another example would be working on loading your weight on the right instep/heel going back and trying to start the rotation of your body in the downswing.

I don’t mind you working on your swing this way because you are working one thing in separate areas of your swing. What I don’t want you to do is something like: working on loading your weight into the right instep and the hand position at the top of your backswing. This would be working on 2 thing in the same area of your swing.

Although this may seem like a good idea, you really don’t have enough time to switch your thoughts from the first thing to the second in the short period of time it takes to get to the top of the backswing.

Hopefully, you understand how to work on your swing. See the swing in 3 different areas. Work on no more than 1 thing in any given area. This way you can keep the thoughts separate and actually make the change you are trying to make.

4. Be Patient

Making changes to your swing takes time. Yes, people can makes changes really fast but most of the time it takes consecutive repetitions of the same exact position for it to take hold.

So how long is it going to take? Well, it varies from person to person. I wrote a tip a while back telling a story of a student that made a significant change in 11 repetitions but he did 11 repetitions of the exact same thing in a row. Read the tip here.

Most of the time it’s going to take you longer to master the positions especially if you’re trying to unlearn a bad habit that you have been doing for a while. This is because the new position will feel uncomfortable and you’ll be constantly battling that urge to go back to what’s comfortable.

Plus, doing a new move may cause you to hit some bad shots. If you keep seeing bad shots, you will want to resort back to your old move. Although you may see some bad shots while making changes you really have to stick with it. If you do, you will see the results of your efforts in the future.

Conclusion

Hopefully, you now have a clear vision of how you should be working on things. I know you want to improve your golf swing really fast but please don’t fall into this trap of working on too many things at once.

All the best,

What is Mind Mapping?

In simple terms, it’s a way to record all of your thoughts, tasks etc. on paper, or in this case, on your computer (the software is not specifically for golf but this is what we are going to be using it for).

Once you list all the areas of your game and what you have to work on to improve etc. you save your file and refer to it when you have completed tasks or if you need to add any new tasks. The hope, is that you’ve created a list of everything you have to do to take your golf game to the next level and you work on each of these things one by one until you have them all completed. Well … as best you can anyway. The more tasks you complete, the better golfer you will become.

Why Mind Map Your Golf Game?

Well, there are so many areas in the game of golf. Because of this, it’s a good idea to list all the different areas and what you need to work on so you can:

1. Stay Organized

2. Not Forget Anything

3. Track Your Progress

4. Add or Subtract New Tasks

Okay, so may be thinking I’m crazy right about now but why would you not want to keep track of every area of your game? If you are trying to improve, it only seem logical to make sure you are working on the various areas so that you can improve. Anyway, this is a pretty neat way of staying organized and making sure that you know exactly what you should be working on to get your game to the next level.

To see how easy this is, I have created a couple of videos. The first shows you where to get the FREE Mind Mapping software. After you watch the software video, click the link below it to go to the download page and get the free software. Then, watch the next video.
